The Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta starts on Thursday 22 August 2024 in Barcelona with the five Challenger teams and the Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand, lining up in one-on-one match-races with four races per day. The top two boats will contest a one-race, winner-takes-all Grand Final on Sunday 25 August. Racing starts at 14.00 CET every day. It is the first time that all the AC75s will go head-to-head and much will be revealed about relative speeds and racing prowess.
While the results from the event don’t impact the America’s Cup, they will certainly impact each team’s performance plan going forward. To win the 37th Cup, it is about improve or die, and it all gets real with the start of the Challenger Selection Series on August 29.
On all competition days, races start at 14:00 CET (08:00 ET / 07:00 CT) and run until 16:30 or 17:00, depending on the schedule.
The Teams
Teams revealed to challenge defender Emirates Team New Zealand (NZL):
• INEOS Britannia (GBR)
• Alinghi Red Bull Racing (SUI)
• Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team (ITA)
• NYYC American Magic (USA)
• Orient Express Racing Team (FRA)
The Preliminary Regatta
Depending on the conditions, the Preliminary Regatta on August 22-25 may well offer some significant clues as to form and a first sight of the racing techniques and playbooks that each team have been honing over the last three years of preparation.
Four days of non-stop racing with four flights per day will ensue and the one-race final will be contested between the top two ranked teams, with the top team getting the, arguably favored, port tack entry on the start line.
